A basket of British Goodies!

Open show South Wales & West of England Cairn Terrier Club 27-01-2008

With an entry of 81 dogs I started this day judging, absolutely not knowing what to expect as I have never judged Cairns in the UK before. I have SEEN Cairns in England before but that was always “ringside-judging” which is an altogether different thing….

Soon it became very clear that I had a big difference in quality. Also a big difference in size. With a different way of judging system I ended up with a line-up of some very good Cairns and some very “not so good” Cairns. Dogs I wouldn’t even consider bringing back into the ring for any line-up. Because they had won their classes I had to let them in. The way I am used to judging, these dogs would not be called back because they would have had a low qualification and therefore not be able to compete with the excellent ones.

Characters were wonderful. All Cairns were well behaved except for the devilish-always-looking-for-fun youngsters. Full of spunk and that’s the way they should be. Coats were overall exceptable. Some exhibitors really are good trimmers and can enhance the way their Cairn looks its best. Some had so much coat it looked like they had exploded! I like a well presented Cairn. Not overtrimmed but certainly not like nothing has been groomed at all. Confirmation is only good in my winners. I have seen really steep pelvises and poor hindquarters along with tails that curl over the back. Cairns very long in body because of poor frontquarters. No forechest and no depth in brisket. That is not what a Cairn should be.

I really liked my Best Dog and the reserve Best Dog/Best Puppydog. Quality in head, confirmation, size and well groomed; it’s a beauty contest! My Best Bitch could have been a little more feminine but I could not change her place with that of my reserve best Bitch which oozes femininity (what lovely head) but lacked perfect hindquarters.

One really lovely bitch entered my ring and caught my eye immediately; a very nice young girl….to my horror I found out, when examining her, she had a kinky tail….This for me is a very bad fault. It’s a genetic defect and dogs, no matter what breed, should be excluded from showing and certainly breeding! A kinky tail is a genetic defect you can see; so many linked defects you cannot and are threatening the dogs health. Beauty is what a judge looks for but that can never be prior to health! As a judge and breeder I would like you to look up kinky tails in books and on your computer and learn as much as possible about this hidden problem.

I had a wonderful day amongst my favourite: the Cairns and the people who like them as much as I do. I was very well looked after and I hope to see you all again.
